To Know God and Make Him Known
Christian Worldview
Jesus said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’
— Matthew 22:37 (NKJV)
Although the classical model of education is usually credited to the classical Greeks, the roots of this model of learning are found throughout the Bible, which indicates that God created us especially to learn this way. In the book of Proverbs, for example, three words are repeated often: knowledge, understanding, and wisdom, corresponding to what the ancients called grammar, dialectic, and rhetoric.
The true purpose of education is to know God fully through our studies of His creation and to build the skills needed to make Him known to the world. When we study with the purpose of knowing God more fully through a subject, we are loving God with our minds. When we see God’s hand in history or science, or discover His wonderful complexity and grace, we love Him even more.
The classical model could therefore be called the Christian Model because it uses this blueprint for learning. Once educators try it, they realize that it is like “teaching with the grain” — simply put, it suits the way God made us.
Subject Integration
“The heavens declare the glory of God,
the skies proclaim the works of his hands.”
— Psalm 19:1 (BSB)
All Truth was created by God and belongs to Him. Not only do the skies proclaim the glory of God, but even the symmetry in an orange slice or the intricate contours of a sea shell do the same. Every law of science, every aspect of art, every man or woman throughout history are works of the Creator. We point students to the purpose of every created thing: to glorify God.
Modern education removes each subject from its context so it can be taught only by a subject matter expert. In Classical Conversations, we integrate learning by having one tutor teach all subjects to one group of students, spending the whole day together discussing literature, government, history, geography, math, and Latin — and delighting in the overlaps. Together we enjoy seeking out God’s hand in everything we study as lifelong lovers of learning.
Statement of Faith
It is the glory of God to conceal a thing:
but the honour of kings is to search out a matter.
— Proverbs 25:2 (KJV)
The purpose of education is to know God and to make Him known. Our commitment to Christ-centered education undergirds everything Classical Conversations does: this is Christian education in the fullest sense.
Fulfilling our mission doesn’t just mean adding Bible study to a secular curriculum. It means recognizing that God has hidden His truth and beauty in every subject, and it is the privilege of families to discover Him as they learn together.
Local Belief Statement
For just as we have many members in one body and all the members do not have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.
— ROMANS 12:4-5 (NASB)
The Local Belief Statement is a community-specific supplement to the official Classical Conversations Statement of Faith, in order to provide clarity and foster unity as we pursue the mission, model, and method of Classical Conversations: To know God and to make Him known. Our method to accomplish this mission is to educate ourselves and our children through the classical model of education, coupled with a Biblical worldview, including specifics regarding biblical authority and inerrancy, sexual morality, the sanctity of life, and other beliefs.
While member families agree to honor these beliefs while in community and in CC-affiliated settings, parents remain the primary teachers of their own children: academically, behaviorally, and spiritually.
Education Independence
“A true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.”
— G.K. Chesterton
Though promising flexibility, publicly funded school choice programs steadily erode parental authority and education independence. Accepting government funds opens the door to
curriculum mandates, standardized testing, and regulatory compliance. As publicly funded “choice” becomes normalized, independent models like privately funded homeschooling are pushed to the margins. Families who decline funding may feel isolated, while those who accept it may face growing restrictions. While not a requirement for enrollment in Classical Conversations, we encourage families to remain private, independent homeschoolers.
